Bonita Springs Is Burning

On Saturday May 13th I was at home getting ready to go to Miami for the weekend. My girlfriend Jackie went out back to have a smoke and she came across some smoke in the sky. I had seen smoke North of where we live before and I heard that they do fire fighter training out there, so this time I wasn’t too worried about it. Well, that was until I stepped outside to take a look at it…
Here is a view of the smoke coming from the North from my driveway.

I hopped on my bike to ride around the neighborhood and get a closer look. I wasn’t the only one who was out to take a gander at the smoke rising from the woods.

I pedalled a bit faster to get towards the front of the neighborhood to get a better shot of the smoke…

Next I rode to the entrance of the neighborhood for a view from Bonita Beach Road.

You’ll see some news crews were gathering around. If you look closely at the picture below, you’ll see a lady from the news approaching me to do an interview.

I talked to the news crew and they got me on camera. Unforutnately I’m not sure which network it was for, so I’m not sure if I ended up on tv or not. Either way, it was exciting. They asked me why I was taking pictures. I told them the pictures were for a blog on my web site. “MySpace?,” they asked.

After they interviewed me, they took some B-Roll of me taking pictures of the fire to go along with my story. Here’s one of the pics I took at this point.

I also snapped a pic of the camera man taking some pics after I was leaving their scene.

There were also a lot of helicopters overhead. Some of them were dumping water on the source of the fire in the woods.

I told the news crew I wasn’t that worried about the fire coming our way, as the wind was going east, way past where Bonita Beach Road ends. I road around and snapped some other pics.

Finally Kara and Kaylee showed up, and we hopped in their car and headed to Miami. I got one more pic of the news trucks.

And we took off to 75…and left the fire behind.

It is still unkown what caused the fire…might be an arsonist, might not be. Either way, when we got home around 6:30 tonight, the fire was still burning and heading north.

Sounds like those wildfires we’ve been having lately but it sure doesn’t look like it, not that I would know what that looks like, thank goodness. You probably know by now we’re in the middle of that season here in South Florida.  It’s been so dry.  We need rain!   Hey, just be glad you don’t have alligators running around.  I’ve read three stories about killer alligators in the last few days.  Stay away from canals and lakes!!!

Two kudos on the great pics and being on the news, dude.

Wow, do you remember when the woods in the lake caught on fire.
I had a cop wake me up and tell me to evacuate my home. So I grabbed
my guitars and pictures and jetted. You realize what is important to you when
It is about to be consumed in flames.

What a pretty neighborhood you are in.  I’m glad you guys are in the clear.  It’s good you have all that water around, too, just in case.  Your pictures are superb.
