Random Wednesday Nights

Current mood:  curious

Okay lets see where should I begin? Okay first off it’s August 31, 2005 meaning that 31 years ago today, my parent’s got married. I know most of you could care less about that but hey, if it wasn’t for them getting married I wouldn’t be here, so let’s get a round of applause for my mom and pops. Holy shit, 31 years is a long time to be married to someone, I must say. Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad! (even though neither of you read this…hehe)

Next up, lets see, tomorrow I will be joined by my father and my sister Kate here in Mays Landing, NJ. That’s 50% of my family in the same place at the same time, kind of crazy, especially considering we haven’t all been together (all 6 of us) since 2002, so that’s kind of cool. My dad will get to see my apartment for the first time and I’ll be having a sleepover of sorts.

The next topic, the reason for my father’s visit – his Uncle Van passed away on Monday night at the age of 96. Now that is a long life I must say. 2005 minus 96 equals…1909!!! Holy sweet jesus that seems like it must’ve been a long time ago. He was a really sweet man though, very old fashioned, he had an unforgettable voice and a smile that was sincere. He leaves behind my sweet Aunt Dot…very nice people and I’m proud to be related to them. You will be missed Uncle Van…last time I saw him was in May of this year. Time flies sometimes.

Well that’s enough of my wednesday night randomness, sorry if you feel like you wasted your time reading this blog, but they can’t all be about Durden’s and TV Shows. Sometimes I just gotta write about life.

The End of the Best Show on Television (Six Feet Under)

Six Feet Under 2001 – 2005

Alot of Sunday nights since June of 2001; that’s what I spent on this show. An hour each time. At the beginning I admit I was pessimistic. A show about a family running a funeral home? And then when I figured out that each episode would start out with somebody dying and eventually that person would end up having their funeral taken care of by the Fishers (the family running the funeral home)…well I wasn’t sure how appealing that could be. It sounded like it could be really depressing…all this death…every episode…almost like the reality of life.

But then I started liking the characters. They were all interesting. There were ghosts…alright not really ghosts, they were more like people having discussions with a ghost of someone that died that was really an inner conflict within themselves. There were freak out moments…crazy insane moments that someone was either contemplating or probably trying to stop themself from doing. There was love and betrayal. There were characters who were afraid to be themselves. There was a family business and a dsyfunctional family.

The story would grow so much over the next 5 years…the characters would grow on you…and the fact that someone would die at the beginning of each show…well that really made things interesting to say the least. Some deaths were brutal some were awkward some were quiet….

Everything about this show was so refreshing though. It was nothing I’d ever seen before but it became everything that I wanted to see. It really became an inspiration for me. I remember reading the friggen hbo.com website about this show every Monday after a new episode aired to get more info or checking in Wed or Thur for a teaser of the new show coming up…alright so maybe I’m a nerd but I’m telling you, I’m sure most people would like this show if they gave it a chance.

Soon every season of it will be available on DVD (1 – 4 are available now…the last season – 5 – will probably be within the next year)…it’s a must see show. It’s almost like watching a huge movie and to finally see it all come together and end…with such grace, closure and sadness…well I guess that is just like life…sure it now feels like this show was short lived but let me tell you, it had a huge effect on me. It really touched me in a way that nothing else could. I don’t really think there could ever be another TV show like this and I doubt there ever will be.

So before I end my this blog I have to mention the man who put his heart and soul into this show – Alan Ball – definitly a terrific writer and mind. I’m looking forward to any of his future projects. Thank you Alan for a great 5 years and a great TV show, that will live on forever.

An Unhealthy Fascination with Durdens

Stop. Before you change your myspace “name” to Tyler Durden, I have to give you some information. It seems that a good percentage of myspace males that use this pseudonym is in fact, a fake fuck. That’s right, a fake fuck.

Now I’m not talking about the people that are obsessed with the movie fight club, I’m talking about the guys who choose to use the name Tyler Durden because it’s the trendy and cool thing to do. Not only are they fake enough not to use their own name but instead of typing in their own headlines they use things like: “Insert creative headline here”.

I will now present you with evidence of my findings. After doing a myspace search for users with the name “Tyler Durden” I found 68 pages of Tylers (most of them Tyler Durden’s with pictures of Brad Pitt and/or Ed Norton). Below are the fakest of the fake Tyler Durdens that I found:

Durden #1
Durden #2
Durden #3
Durden #4
Durden #5
Durden #6
Durden #7
Durden #8
Durden #9
Durden #10
Durden #11
Durden #12
Durden #13
Durden #14

Most of them seem to be chauvinist pigs who’s friends lists are filled with 200 beautiful women, whom they probably know zero of in real life.

I guess the real thing that bothers me about all this Tyler Durden fakeness is that we’ll never know who the real Tyler Durden is.

To anyone out there who’s name is REALLY Tyler Durden, I apologize. To the rest of you, give it up.

Found a fake Durden? Please post it as a reply on this blog.

So the next time you sign on myspace and there’s a new friend request from some topless dude, gripping his junk and his name is supposedly “Tyler Durden”, please, JUST SAY NO to Durdens.

Nate’s Dead

That’s right, Nathaniel Samuel Fisher, Jr. died. Six Feet Under is coming to an end. Dammit why is everything coming to an end this year? What’s up with that? First Star Wars and now Six Feet Under? What’s next???

Oh well, I’m looking forward to the Sopranos, the only other television show that I watch. And the final 3 episodes of SFU in the upcoming weeks.

Speaking of things ending, it’s August already deyam…summer is getting ready to wrap up…

This blog was so random, but it’s all good.
