Not once has my favorite band asked me to listen to their music. Not once have they asked me what I liked about their new music video. They never asked me to come to their concert or play their album over and over until I couldn’t listen to it anymore.
So this is my problem with bands and mySpace. I understand that mySpace is a great outlet for advertising your band, getting your music heard and it’s a cheap way to create a web page, but still, there is so much bullshit to wade through that it’s getting to be quite annoying. Take for instance some random band that sent me this message last night:
From: Phase 9
Date: Dec 20, 2005 11:51 PM
hey whats up? dont wanna sound super fucking generic emails but im honestly out looking for some fresh opinions on our video we just put up. I promise i will respond and not be a whore like everyone else. Def just looking for some fresh feedback and i thought you might have a min to help me out. If not its cool and thanks for your time, if so i would be very appreciative of it. Thanks so much for not at this point rejecting the email and hopefully ill hear from you soon. thanks again
anthony
Okay so they didn’t go super generic with the email (how do you sound super fucking generic emails???), they tried sounding witty and personal with me. They asked politely and thanked me a lot for reading their message alone. Now my problem with this is that:
1) Spam mail sucks ass as it is…do we really need to receive shit spam from bands now too? You know that feeling when you see a spam message and it looks like total bullshit and you can’t delete it fast enough…now we’re wading through bands spam mail in mySpace…that’s just not cool…
2) How the fuck will bands stand out among this sea of “music” on mySpace? Everywhere I look there are bands sounding and looking alike…there’s just no creativity and being in a band has basically turned into masturbation…everyone is doing it.
I remember a time on the internet when band websites were created by their fans, the people who loved them and couldnt get enough of them and wanted a resource for learning more about their favorite bands and sharing information with other people…but now it’s like something else. It feels like the internet is hurting bands now…everyone has web pages, myspace, mp3s…everything is just readily accessible with bands…how the fuck do you choose???
Unfortunately it brings me to the point where I can’t stand checking out another band on the internet…I’d much rather hear a new band live for the first time…if a band can bring you in with their live show thats where it’s at for me. I will look up your website or mySpace page and I will add you on my own time. If I want to watch your videos and download your tunes I will, I don’t need your invite. And I’m sorry, but I’m not into giving out my opionons on music videos whether you are the Foo Fighters or Phase 9.
Everything here on mySpace feels so saturated, good luck sifting through it and if you find anything worthwhile, please please please…DONT LET ME KNOW…I’d like to find out about it on my own (unless you are Edwin or Kate, whom opinions I trust 85 percent the time…well Kate’s…lets make that 66 percent….j/k)
